Loss of “Church” Status

Recent changes in the Hungarian Church Law have taken away the previously favorable status of Sim Shalom Congregation as a recognized Religious Institution, which carried substantial financial advantages. These changes are being protested in various courts.

Julia Gardos’ Jewish-Christian-Muslim Conf. talk

JCM (Jewish Christian Muslim) is an interfaith conference that has been held annually in Germany for the past 39 years. The members of these three religions have the chance to learn about each other’s traditions and beliefs at the conference through lectures, seminars, project groups, discussion groups and services. This dialogue enables a better understanding and acceptance of the other religions. This year the topic was “Young, gifted and religious”. Sim Shalom had a satisfying, but challenging year in 2011. Our new Synagogue premises have made possible several new kinds of programs which are bringing new members into the community. That is the good news; the bad news has been a severe deterioration in our relationship to the Hungarian government.
